![]() Partially in the same boat, and honestly kids sleep a ton and mostly need attention when I'm working my regular hours.įor example, I'm with my family in the morning before beginning work, see them occasionally during the day, and then spend two and a half hours in the evening on dinner, clean-up, and bed-time routine. I think I'll continuously be adjusting the balance for as long as I'm involved in Drupal. I try and do more of a 'directing' role, but the problem there becomes, will people actually listen? I think Earl Miles has shown that it can work, but I'm finding it harder for me to adjust to that. If I don't spend enough time doing stuff, I lose my ability to influence and make changes happen. Since Drupal is a do-ocracy, there is an intense amount of pressure for me to have a bad balance between work, Drupal, and my life. I'm pretty much offline most, if not all of the weekend, even though I probably can't stop thinking about it. I'm not feeling like it's very sustainable during the week. Most of the free time I get is either in-between projects, or late at night after the baby is asleep, which means about an hour, maybe two before I'm about to pass out. Related thoughts on Media stuff also posted in I admit I haven't played much with Asset, but I think I share a lot of the same concerns about the differences between Scald and File entity there. The key will be actually doing the collaboration. In Portland we had another interesting conversation with their dev team and Kevin O'Leary form Acquia about possibly looking to make Media a unified UI on top of either File entity or Scald Atoms which is something I fully support. Files in Drupal core and above are not going away anytime soon, so I think it makes sense to build a solution on top of what core provides rather than roll our own, which is what Scald did with 'Atoms.' We can help improve APIs for file usage and access by building on top of files. When the Scald team talked with me at DrupalCon Munich, most of their concerns about using files were fixable things, and things we have likely already fixed in the 2.x branch of File entity. I think the decision to not use files as the underlying 'what is an item' is the wrong choice in my opinion. I've heard the developers say both 'Scal-DEE' and 'Scald' and I think they're just playing tricks on me. Both in what they're doing and how you're supposed to pronounce the module. ![]() I think the biggest problem is when core developers that worked hard to make major changes then get all burnt out and don't contribute for a while, when really they're the ones we need the biggest help solving the problems caused by the major changes. It will be interesting having the conversation about being able to work on more new features within a major version itself. So people that want the latest and greatest can use those major releases sooner, while the people that want a little more stability can use the long term support version. , and then a shorter, one year dev cycle for cleaning up and fixing things we saw went wrong in the previous release, and then this major release is the 'Long term support' version. Having a longer dev cycle for major changes, say two years and make a major release. I've always been a tremendous supporter of the Ubuntu model of releases. ![]() I would personally hope that we spend D9 focusing on a lighter dev cycle, cleanups due to the major changes, and getting running on D8.
